Our Programs

Educational Programs and Activities

Maui Cat Rescue will invite local experts, teachers, and scientists to provide education on cats, their lives and habits, and their relationship to the natural environment of the Island. We will offer graphic presentations, lectures and slideshows at the cat cafe.

Maui Cat Rescue will also partner with the Hawaii Department of Education and local schools in the area to raise awareness and provide organized outings to the café in which grade-school children can become more familiar with the cats and learn about the needs and problems created by the large feral cat population and the solutions that are most humane, such as trap spay and neuter and release programs, and fostering programs like the cat cafe.

We also will chronicle the daily adventures and lives of the cats at the cat cafe and various activities at the cat cafe on the corporation’s website. There will be short bios on each cat, and each time a cat is adopted, it will be featured with the adoptive family. Maui Cat Rescue will also take advantage of blogs and social networking sites to promote its activities and its adoption program.

By offering educational events as well as our publications and website, Maui Cat Rescue will educate the public on subjects related to the prevention of cruelty to feral cats, will be beneficial to the community and will advocate for the protection of Maui’s natural habitat.

Collaboration with Existing Shelters on the Island

In addition to operating its in-house program, Maui Cat Rescue will seek out opportunities to collaborate with existing shelters on the Island to fulfill our mission of raising awareness and providing humane treatment for cats. This will include supporting existing spay and neuter programs with resources and donations, contributing to necessary veterinary care for shelters, and increasing the capacity of existing shelters to foster cats.

Maui Cat Rescue anticipates that it may have funds in excess of the costs of its in-house fostering and adoption programs and hands-on collaboration with other shelters. Such funds will be used first to expand the capacity and resources available to its fostering and adoption program at the Cat cafe, and secondly to further the mission of humane and caring solutions for Maui’s feral cat population in the form of grants and distributions to support existing shelters. The purpose of any such grants would be to increase their capacity and the ability to provide high-quality veterinary care and subsidize fostering operations through the island. Distributions and grants will be exclusively for these charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and will not be used for personal gains of any sort.

Programs for Volunteers

Maui Cat Rescue will rely on volunteers at the cat cafe to keep operating expenses to lower its operating costs. Volunteers will gain experience in caring for cats, ensuring their living space is clean and safe, and moderating the personalities and moods of different cats to deescalate situations and ensure the socializing experience is positive for cats and visitors. In the process, volunteers will also gain knowledge and valuable training to educate visitors on the plight of cats on Maui, the need to control overpopulation, and existing spay and neuter programs.

Multimedia

It is our goal to bring awareness from every medium possible and this does not exclude documentaries and photos of our activities. By documenting and reporting our efforts we intend to broaden our outreach. These multimedia features will be recorded by our volunteers during the aforementioned activities and will be available to the public.
